$25 And a Well-Written Letter Could Land You The Home Of Your Dreams

A Canadian woman wasn't having much luck trying to sell her $1.7 million, 5,000 sq ft home in Alberta, Canada, so she decided to try another tactic - give it to someone.

Alla Wagner listed her home located in Millarville, Alta. last year, but after five months on the market, the home nestled in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains failed to attract any buyers. So, drawing on an similar idea outlined in the 1996 movie, "The Spitfire Grill,"she invited up to 68,000 entrants to write her a brief, 350-word letter on why they should win the house. To enter, people must also submit a $25 entrance fee.

"What do I have to lose? Like, I have nothing to lose," Wanger told CTV Calgary

Five percent of the proceeds from the sale will be donated to a women's shelter in Calgary, Wagner says.

One condition of the contest is that Wagner must receive enough entry fees to cover the home's $1.7 million listing price. The contest will be cancelled and refunds will be issued if there aren't enough enough entries submitted, or if the house is sold.

The online ad says 500 finalists will be selected out of the 68,000 and their letters reviewed by a panel of independent judges who will determine the winner, Wagner says.

"Just that one family that will end up in this home, in this house, and make it into a home for themselves and be happy here, as happy as I have been – I know that it’s going to be a beautiful story in the end," Wagner said.
