Another restoration of a historic painting of great significance was a major fail. This time, it was a painting from baroque artist Bartolomé Esteban Murillo: The Immaculate Conception of Los Venerables. It's a picture of Mary, mother of Jesus Christ that was turned into a jumbled blob with lips, after not one, but two attempts to restore it.
The anonymous owner paid $1,350 for it to be cleaned by a furniture restorer. Yes that's right. Paid a guy who refinishes old chairs to restore a masterpiece painting! Did they find him on Craigslist? And after the owner was not pleased with the first potato head with lips, the furniture guy gave it another shot. NOT better!
But at least these botched restorations are bringing the classics into modern culture.
Here's the hatchet job from a few years back. It's referred to as the “Beast Jesus” restoration fail of 2012. Jesus was turned into a sasquatch.
