An NHL referee is under investigation by the league after he was caught on a hot mic admitting that he wanted to get Nashville Predators into the penalty box (audio proof below).
Halfway through the game, the ref sent Preds forward Viktor Arvidsson to the penalty box for tripping. Video clearly showed he did not trip the Red Wings player (who pretended to be tripped).
Seconds later, a hot mic on the official heard him clearly say, "It wasn't much, but I wanted to get a f---ing penalty against Nashville early." It was caught by the tv broadcast of the game.
He states his intention pretty clearly. He "wanted to".
Warning. This referee uses an f-bomb and should get 2 minutes for being a potty mouth.
Apologists have suggested he was doing what is often suspected, giving a "make good call". This is where a referee acknowledges they made a poor call against one team. So they try to "make it good" by giving the other team a penalty to even things out.
But we say, two wrongs don't a right.
Anyway, SCOREBOARD. The Preds won 2-0.
