Pet goldfish the size of footballs are taking over our lakes and streams. And wildlife officials are pleading with people to stop throwing goldfish into lakes, ponds, and rivers.
It seems like there's been a rash of stories of giant goldfish being caught by fishermen. So those same goldfish that you want at the fair by throwing a ping-pong ball, and always die in your expensive aquarium, actually thrive in the wild. And they grow enormous.
You wouldn't think so, but carp and goldfish can actually live through frozen lake winters and then waters that are heavily polluted because they require very little oxygen to survive.
It turns out goldfish are an invasive species and can destroy an ecosystem.
