The rumor got so out of control and was believed by so many people and students, that a school district had to have a news release to deny it.
They were indeed NOT accomodating a child who identified as a cat (and was a furry in a cat costume) by providing a litter box in the unisex bathroom.
Things came to a head when someone addressed the school board about this NOT REAL thing as being "nefarious" and "part of an agenda" in schools nationwide. See below. (If the video starts at the beginning, go to the 32:50 mark)
In the Superintendant of Midland School District's Facebook post, Michael Sharrow said, "Let me be clear in this communication. There is no truth whatsoever to this false statement/accusation! There have never been litter boxes within MPS schools. It is such a source of disappointment that I felt the necessity to communicate this message to you."

The false rumor was used by theΒ Michigan Republican Party Co-Chair Meshawn Maddock, who added on Facebook, βParent heroes will TAKE BACK our schools.β
