Dunia Sibomana, won the title at the Nassau County high school wrestling championships in February. In the rearview mirror is the time he was attacked by chimpanzees and barely survived.
6 years ago, he and several family members were attacked by a band of wild chimpanzees in his home country of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, in Central Africa. His brother and cousin did not come out of that attack alive.
Sibomana was severely disfigured by the chimpanzees. At age 8, he arrived on Long Island for the 14 surgeries to his face, thanks to Smile Rescue Fund for Kids, which identifies children in resource-poor countries who need facial or cranial surgeries. Numerous doctors and surgeons worked on him for free.
He was adopted by the Rodriguez family and started wrestling shortly after that. Read more of his incredible story here.
