2 beaches in middle Tennessee are closed for swimming because of high levels of bacteria. The high levels have been attributed to low lake levels and heavy run-off from local farms. The US Army Corps of Engineers closed down the beaches where the high levels were found.
Closed for swimming are Defeated Creek Day Use Swim Beach (Carthage) and Roaring River Swim Beach (Gainesboro) at Cordell Hull Lake. They are closed until the Corps of Engineers determines them safe. Both areas are still open for non-swimming uses like boating and picnics.
In the area, an alternative beach for swimming would be Wartrace Day Use Beach.
