The GRAMMY Awards Just Renamed the Rap, Urban & Latin Categories

As protests against white supremacy and police brutality continue across the world, the Recording Academy has renamed several of its categories.

The 'Best Urban Contemporary' category -- most recently won by Lizzo for Cuz I Love You -- will now be called Best Progressive R&B Album to “appropriately categorize and describe this subgenre."

Tyler the Creator previously called out the awards show back in January for its use of the term 'urban,' calling it the "politically correct way to say the n-word."

"It sucks that whenever we — and I mean guys that look like me — do anything that's genre-bending or that's anything, they always put it in a rap or urban category," Tyler told reporters.

The Best Rap/Sung Performance category will now be known as Best Melodic Rap Performance to “represent the inclusivity of the growing hybrid trends."

Additionally, the Latin Pop Album and Latin Rock, Urban or Alternative Album categories have been changed to Best Latin Pop or Urban Album and Best Latin Rock or Alternative Album. [That was very confusing to write and surely just as confusing for you to read, but it is what it is.]

Led by initiatives like The Show Must Be Paused -- started by two Black, female record label executives following the murder of George Floyd -- the music business as a whole continues to examine [and accordingly shift] its inappropriate practices in regards to Black artists.

Republic Records -- who represents artists like Drake, The Weeknd, Taylor Swift and Ariana Grande -- has also pledged to remove the term 'urban' from its verbiage in describing departments, employee titles and music genres. They encouraged the rest of the music industry to follow suit.
