New Law Will Result In Felony Charges If You Illegally Pass School Bus

I can't tell you how many times I've seen in person people driving right past a school bus while their stop sign is out. There have been several cases in where people have illegally passed the school bus and actually hit children and it's absolutely heartbreaking!

Well, a new law here in Tennessee could significantly raise the fine for drivers who don't stop for school buses.

According to the current law, drivers must stop when a bus has stopped to pick up or drop off children. The driver must come to a stop before reaching that bus and can't go until the stop sign halt and the bus resumes motion.

The new proposed law HB0055 was introduced by Rep. Jason Potts and it would make it a Class E felony if caught not stopping. Right now there's a maximum fine of $1,000, but if the law is passed the fine would be no less than $500, but no more than $3,000.

If passed, the law would take effect July 1, 2019.
