A law which went into effect yesterday in New York no longer requires parents to identify their newborn as male or female. In addition, gender reassignment surgery is no longer required for those that identify with a gender other than the one they were born with. Gender can be changed to male, female, or "X" by anyone - without a note from a doctor.
New York City is not the first to pass the Gender X bill. Washington State, Oregon, and California passed similar measures last year.
Citizens in those states can also identify their gender on official state documents (like driver's licenses) as "X".
