If you own a can of Banana Boat Hair & Scalp Spray, make sure to check if the batch has been recalled.
They have announced a voluntary recall after discovering the presence of benzene, which can cause cancer. The company stated that unexpected levels of benzene came from the propellant that sprays the sunscreen out of the can, despite not using benzene in any of their products.
The Banana Boat Hair & Scalp Sunscreen Spray SPF 30 with the following batch numbers should cease to be used and should be disposed of immediately (found at the bottom of the can):
- Lot Code 20016AF, Expiration December 2022
- Lot Code 20084BF, Expiration February 2023
- Lot Code 21139AF, Expiration April 2024

An independent health assessment using established exposure modeling guidelines found that daily exposure to the benzene in the recalled products are not expected to cause adverse health consequences.
