This really made my day today.
It's no secret that the fashion industry is notorious for exclusion, particularly Indigenous folks, other POC, and plus size individuals—their faces HARDLY ever appear on the cover of magazines, fashion editorials and even runways.
So when I saw Yalitza Aparicio on the cover of Vogue Mexico I was ecstatic! If you're not familiar with her she's the star of Alfonso Cuarón’s Roma (one of my favorite movies this year).
Aparicio looks stunning in Dior's 2019 resort collection on the cover. The words 'a star is born" are also featured on the cover in the Indigenous language Mixtec.
Along with the cover, Vogue revealed a short video featuring Yalitza where she talks about her dreams, her family, and being camera shy.
“Stereotypes that only one type of person can aspire to be in a movie or on the cover of a magazine are being broken,” she said in the video. “They’re getting to know other faces from Mexico and that’s something that makes me so happy and proud of my roots.”
Roma is now on Netflix!
