Photo Series Showcases Disney Princesses As Modern-Day Career Women

posted by Savannah -

In honor of International Women's Day, a group of famous cosplayers teamed up to show Disney Princesses in a new light -- as modern-day career women!

For example, Frozen's ice-queen Elsa is depicted as a disaster relief architect, while The Little Mermaid's Ariel is an archaeologist

@onlyalicat conceptualized an International Women’s Day project exploring modern day jobs Disney Princesses might have. The ladies involved contributed ideas, and then took on the role as one of the characters. I see Elsa as a metaphor for the repressed creative and wanted to see her in a creative field. Since she builds a whole ice castle in Frozen, how about an architect? - Photo by @geekstrong; screencapped from @buzzfeed ! - Check our the other princesses’ professions at or by going to the pages of these amazing ladies: @darthlexii @krystinaarielle @suzukichan_cosplay @joannalynnbert @onlyalicat @thespritelyone @thatprincessgirl @kitty_the_dork - - - #queenelsa #frozen #moderndayprincesses #disneyreimagined #disneyprincess #architecture #empower

Cosplayer Ali Williams spearheaded the project, and wrote a blog explaining her thoughts on it in detail.

"The true spirit of a princess has little to do with her glittering gowns and fairy godmother; the power of the princess is in her kindness, bravery, and sense of adventure. The trouble with fairytales is that the stories are set in patriarchal eras in fantasy lands. Critics attack Disney Princesses for being bad role models, when in fact, these characters are strong, inspirational role models.

As a long-time admirer of these fairy tales, a thought struck me: what if the Disney Princesses were living today? What kind of careers might they pursue if they had the opportunity? Would critics still perceive them as weak role models, or might their perceptions change

Happy International Women’s Day! ☀️ I’ve been hinting at this project for a few days now! When @onlyalicat invited me to be a part of her #womensdayprincesses project, I knew immediately who I wanted to be and what, in my mind, their career would be. 🎨 The thing that struck me the most about Rapunzel when I first saw her movie was her eagerness to learn and try new things. In the very first song she tried painting, guitar, ballet, candlemaking, ventriloquism, among many other hobbies. 😅 For me that highlighted her creativity and an amazing zest for life. So if Rapunzel lived in modern times, I think she would make a fantastic teacher. Her passion and quirkiness would endear her students, and her art projects would be unparalleled. She’d inspire kids to reach beyond the limitations of their personal towers. To many teachers are an unappreciated profession, but the spark to create starts in school, and Rapunzel would encourage her students to live their dreams. 💪🏻💪🏻💪🏻Check our the other princesses in the article by our fearless leader @onlyalicat (link located in bio). Special thank you to Newbury Oaks Preschool. #disneycosplay #teachersofinstagram #internationalwomensday #mandymoore #tangledtheseries #rapunzel ❤️💕❤️
