Kanye West is being heavily criticized for what many are calling his most controversial statement ever, which he made during an appearance with TMZ Live on Tuesday.
"When you hear about slavery for 400 years ... For 400 years? That sounds like a choice," West said. "You were there for 400 years and it's all of y'all? It's like we're mentally imprisoned."
He literally said that 400 years of slavery sounded like a choice the slaves made. Can Kanye be 100% cancelled yet? Like foreal 👀 pic.twitter.com/PjFxqz3qrh— TATIANNA (@TATIANNANOW) May 2, 2018
.@kanyewest just said slavery was a choice… a stolen people deprived of their languages, identities, cultures and families, w/o license to communicate thru the written word? WHAT IS CHOICE? tu. no. sirve. https://t.co/0vKwozNvR4— Marjua Estevez (@_MsEstevez) May 1, 2018
kanye, if slavery was an option...what was the alternative?— homo thou art loosed. (@XavierDLeau) May 1, 2018
TMZ reporter Van Lathan eventually took Kanye to task for the tendentious sentiment.
"While you are making music and being an artist and living the life that you've earned by being a genius, the rest of us in society have to deal with these threats to our lives," Lathan said. "We have to deal with the marginalization that's come from the 400 years of slavery that you said for our people was a choice. Frankly, I'm disappointed, I'm appalled, and brother, I am unbelievably hurt by the fact that you have morphed into something to me, that's not real."
Damn... I wish Charlemagne interview was the last thing we heard from Ye ...— OldMan Ebro (@oldmanebro) May 1, 2018
But he had to run his ass up to TMZ and further play himself.. SMH ...
Who is the TMZ guy that fried him tho? 🤣🤣🤣
Shouts to @VanLathan tho for telling Kanye to his face that he’s not a free thinker, that he’s “absent of thought” altogether. You’re speaking truth to what millions of his fans/ex-fans want to communicate to him.— Trill Laimbeer (@Mooque) May 1, 2018
Yeezy later to took to Twitter to try and clarify his statements.
to make myself clear. Of course I know that slaves did not get shackled and put on a boat by free will— KANYE WEST (@kanyewest) May 1, 2018
My point is for us to have stayed in that position even though the numbers were on our side means that we were mentally enslaved— KANYE WEST (@kanyewest) May 1, 2018
They cut out our tongues so we couldn't communicate to each other. I will not allow my tongue to be cut— KANYE WEST (@kanyewest) May 1, 2018
Can’t imagine better evidence for Kanye’s claim that he has no manager and can’t be managed than this decision to make a TMZ newsroom appearance.— southpaw (@nycsouthpaw) May 1, 2018
Black men being beaten & raped, Black Women being beaten & raped, black families destroyed and broken, Black people over worked never paid, Black kids forced into illiteracy, Black people burned, dragged, whipped, hung & beaten to death yet Kanye West says slavery was a choice.— Mr. Weeks ✊🏽 (@MrDane1982) May 1, 2018
@VanLathan strong voice!!! I appreciate you speaking up. Everyone else seemed too nervous to rebuttal.— AR1OSO (@MillaGunz) May 1, 2018
