Actor and director Tyler Perry dropped over $400k to pay off the layaway debts at two Atlanta-area Walmarts this week, inspiring Kid Rock to do the same here in Nashville.
“I know it’s hard times, everyone’s struggling and I’m just really, really grateful to be able to be in a position to do this,” Perry said in a video posted to social media Thursday night. “So, God bless you, go get your stuff. Merry Christmas!”
The next day, Kid Rock followed suit.
Tom Meyer, who manages the local Walmart selected by Kid Rock, told WBIR-TV that Kid called Friday to set up the deal. It cost $81,000 to close out the store's 350 layaway accounts. Customers have also received cards that say "Merry Christmas from your neighbor! - Kid Rock" with their items.
The move comes just one week after Kid Rock had to step down from being Grand Marshal of the Nashville Christmas parade, after he made a controversial comment about Joy Behar on Fox & Friends.
